The Story Club.

Kort før jul afholdt The Story Club sit første arrangement i Lilongwe, Malawis hovedstad.

In English:
Shortly before Christmas, The Story Club was launched in Lilongwe, capital of Malawi, by writer Shadreck Chikoti, head of Panafrica Publishers (the publishing project that I co-founded). The Story Club is a rallying-ground for writers, critics and readers, a place for exchanging thoughts that will support the growing literary environment in Malawi, and a useful source of inspiration for anyone in the region who is interested in literature. In a wider perspective we hope that The Story Club encourages ideas that may one day become books at Panafrica Publishers.

As The Story Club does not (yet) have a permanent address, the opening night was held at Crossroads Hotel in Lilongwe and supported by the Norwegian Embassy. It was a huge success! People came from all over the country and was met by a range of interesting contributors. On stage the event featured the spoken word-artist Q Malewezi, the 19 years old novelist Priscilla Semphere and Mr. Shemu Joyah, father of the Malawian film industry and a writer of children’s books, among others.

How I would have loved to be there! But even if the budget doesn’t (and may never) stretch to another trip to Malawi, it is wonderful to sit here knowing, that a light-hearted idea exchanged between two people at a conference in Stockholm back i 2008 (when Shadreck and I first discussed the founding of a publishing house in Malawi) can evolve into something as real as Panafrica Publishers, and now also The Story Club.

Here you can watch a short Malawian TV newsclip about The Story Club.
